Drew Ludtke has returned to his alma mater to coach men's and women's cross country and track at Lake Superior State University. During Ludtke's first season as head coach, LSSU athletes set 26 school records in throwing events, sprints, hurdles, relays and distance. Every person on the team set a personal best, and including walk-on freshmen who were a part of school records during their first year competing at the NCAA Division II level. Senior Aaron Litzner highlighted the 2002-03 season by setting an indoor GLIAC record (14:36) in the men's 5,000 meters. Ludtke was a member of the 1995-96 LSSU men's basketball team that won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Division II Regional. He was a walk-on member of the 1998 Laker cross country team that was ranked 21st nationally. As an LSSU track walk-on, he placed in the top six in the 800-meter run on three occasions. After graduating from LSSU in 1999 with a B.S. in psychology, he continued competing for the University of North Texas, running the 1,500 in a personal best 4:00.17. He helped North Texas to the Sun Belt Conference track title in 2000. North Texas won the SBC men's cross country title in the fall of 2000, while Ludtke was an assistant distance coach. In December, 2001, he took over as the distance coach and led the women's team to a second-place SBC indoor finish. The men's track team won the SBC outdoor title in 2002. Ludtke received an M.S. in kinesiology, specializing in sport psychology, from North Texas in 2001. He earned USATF Level II certification in sprints and hurdles in July, 2002. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. Ludtke has been involved in competitive running since 1983 and comes from a family that is very involved in track and field. His sister, Jane, holds the Central Michigan school discus record. Another sister, Ann, was a distance runner at LSSU and is currently the assistant track coach at Dearborn-Crestwood. Both parents, Ted and Joan, were track and cross country coaches at White Cloud High School. Ted also coached high school basketball for 20 years. |
