Jan. 22, 2007 ANN ARBOR - Dana Skytta and Courtney Smith were the first athletes in Lake Superior State track and field history to compete in the pentathlon. They were among six Lakers who competed at the Red Simmons Invitational held Saturday at the University of Michigan. "LSSU was the only DII team at the meet," LSSU coach Steve Eles said. "Facing mostly Division I opponents, our athletes had great performances." Skytta placed fifth in the men's pentathlon, totaling a new school record 2,827 points. Smith was seventh in the women's event, totaling 1,770 points. Katie Scott shattered LSSU's school record in the women's 3,000-meter run by 14 seconds and placed sixth in 10:26.30. Adam Smith finished third in the men's 400-meter dash with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of :49.31. His converted time currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division II. Marc Small was third in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.89. Tom Thornton clocked an 8:42.75 for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's fastest 3,000-meter time so far this season. He placed 14th. |
