Feb. 11, 2007

BOSTON - Lake Superior State freshman Katie Scott led Division II runners by finishing 20th among 60 competitors in the women's 5,000-meter run Saturday at the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University.

Scott clocked a school-record time of 17:45.95, which ranks 14th nationally in DII. She is the only freshman ranked nationally in that event.

"Katie not only shattered the old school record by 57 seconds, but she also met the NCAA Qualifying Standard," LSSU coach Steve Eles said. "Katie was the first DII athlete in the women's 5K, which was highlighted by Olympians, professional athletes from Reebok and several prominent DI athletes."

Junior Adam Smith, who won his men's 400-meter dash heat Friday with a school-record time of :48.20, finished seventh among 162 competitors. DJ Battistella, another heat winner with a time of :49.22, placed 27th.
