Feb. 23, 2007 UNIVERSITY CENTER - Lake Superior State junior Adam Smith clocked the fastest preliminary time of :49.05 in the men's 400-meter dash during the first day of competition at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Friday at Saginaw Valley State. Smith and teammate DJ Battistella, who qualified seventh, both advanced to Saturday's finals. Battistella also qualified for the men's 200-meter dash finals after placing seventh in the preliminaries with a time of :22.81. Smith also met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. LSSU freshman Katie Scott placed third in the women's 5,000-meter run with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:33.87. Her time also bettered her former school record of 17:45.95. Ben Tarbutton was 11th in the men's 5,000 with a time of 15:40.01.
