Feb. 24, 2007 UNIVERSITY CENTER - Lake Superior State's DJ Battistella, Evan Williams, Marc Small and Adam Smith clocked a school record 3:21.64 to place second in the men's 4x400-meter relay and lead the Lakers at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday at Saginaw Valley State. The LSSU men finished sixth among eight teams, while the Laker women were eighth among nine teams. Grand Valley State swept the men's and women's titles. Smith and Battistella qualified first and seventh, respectively, in the 400-meter dash, and finished third and fifth, respectively, in the finals. Smith clocked a :48.77, while Battistella finished in :49.83 in the finals. Battistella also competed in the 200-meter dash finals and moved up one spot to sixth place with a time of :22.84. Small finished third in the 800-meter run (1:55.69), and Tom Thornton was seventh in the 3,000-meter run (8:44.23). Travis Baril placed fourth in the high jump (6-4 ¼), while Ben Tarbutton was 11th in the men's 5,000 with a time of 15:40.01. LSSU freshman Katie Scott placed third in the women's 5,000-meter run on Friday with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:33.87. Her time also bettered her former school record of 17:45.95. On Saturday, she finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a school-record time of 10:17.66. The LSSU distance medley relay team of Mandi DeBlock, Amanda Pieczynski, Marissa Ingle and Stephanie Riedel placed fifth in 12:56.60.
