DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Lake Superior State men's track and field team placed second among 15 teams, while the LSSU women's team was fourth among 12 teams at the Dick Small Invitational held Saturday at Defiance College.

The Laker men's and women's teams won two events each and combined to garner 27 top-10 finishes. Adam Smith, Evan Williams, Marc Small and Darryl Byrge won the men's 4x400-meter relay in 3:24.26. Scott Hosie finished first in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:59.28, while teammate Tom Thornton was third in 10:34.09.

For the LSSU women, Jill Walton won the discus throw with a toss of 35.53 meters and finished second in the shot put with a throw of 11.55 meters. Katie Scott won the 1,500-meter run in 4:55.40.

The Laker women also dominated the 800-meter run as Marissa Ingle finished second in 2:29.10, followed by Mandi DeBlock in third (2.29.20) and Jade Szubelak in fifth (2:30.20). Ashley Quick placed second in the women's 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:04.97.

Travis Baril placed second in the men's high jump (1.87m) and fourth in the long jump (5.59m). Third-place finishes went to Adam Smith in the 200-meter dash (:22.76) and Luke Allen in the 1,500-meter run (4:13.27). Byrge was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (:17.42).
