April 15, 2007 UNIVERSITY CENTER - Senior transfer Marc Small won the 800-meter run in 1:56.70 to lead the Lake Superior State men's track and field team to a second-place finish at the 11-team SVSU Outdoor Collegiate held Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University. The LSSU women's team finished seventh among 11 teams. Small, who is from Akron, Ohio, won the men's 800 in 1:56.70, while Evan Williams was fifth (1:59.29) and Jason Ferguson eighth (2:02.80). Small also teamed with Ross Malatinsky, Williams and Travis Baril to finish second in the men's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:28.91. The Lakers' 4x100-meter relay team of Jordan Baker, Darryl Byrge, Baril and Paul Davis placed fourth and clocked a school-record time of :43.95. Baril also placed second in the high jump (6-4) and triple jump (12.27 meters). Byrge was third in the 400-meter hurdles (:58.78) and fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (:16.42). Other fifth-place finishes went to Chris Olds in the 1,500-meter run (4:08.60) and Jordan Romel in the shot put (13.12 meters). Jill Walton placed second in the discus throw (38.50 meters) and sixth in the shot put (11.50 meters) to help lead the LSSU women's team. Amanda Pieczynski placed fourth in the 100-meter dash (:13.21), and seventh in the 200-meter dash and long jump (14-1 ¼). Her 200-meter time of :26.92 set a new school record. Mandi DeBlock placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:32.06), and Stephanie Riedel was sixth in the 3,000-meter run (10:53.90). The LSSU teams performed well in the team standings despite being without standouts Katie Scott and Adam Smith, who were competing at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
