VanderWal, Armstrong head winter GLIAC All-Academic list

BAY CITY - Seven members of the Lake Superior State men's indoor track and field team, five representatives of the Laker women's basketball team and three women's indoor track and field athletes received Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic honors for the 2007 winter sports season.

LSSU's top two athletes academically were basketball players Alyssa Vanderwall (Allendale, Mich.), who is a sophomore center with a 3.98 grade point average, and Jaclyn Armstrong (Haslett, Mich.), who is a junior center with a 3.96 GPA. They major in nursing and exercise science, respectively.

Seniors Mandi Johnson (St. Ignace, Mich.) and Monica Rehmann (St. Johns, Mich.), and junior Danielle Makins (Grosse Ile, Mich.) of the women's basketball team were also named to the all-academic team. Rehmann was a three-time GLIAC All-Academic honoree.

Junior Evan Williams (Plainwell, Mich.) was the top student-athlete on the men's indoor track and field team. He carries a 3.65 GPA while majoring in mathematics/secondary education. Senior Scott Hosie (Twelve Mile, Ind.), juniors Emory Nelkie (West Branch, Mich.), Adam Smith (Mount Pleasant, Mich.), Tom Thornton (Sand Lake, Mich.) and Andrew Benson (Goodrich, Mich.), and sophomore Luke Allen (Manistee, Mich.) were also named to the all-academic team.

Sophomores Katie Scott (Mitchell, Ont.), Stephanie Riedel (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Jade Szubelak (Fairview, Mich.) of the women's indoor track and field team also earned all-academic recognition. Scott has a 3.80 GPA while majoring in exercise science.
