MIDLAND - The Lake Superior State men's track and field team won four events, and the LSSU women's team won three at the Northwood Open held Saturday. The Laker women also improved upon three school records during the day. DJ Battistella won the men's 400-meter dash in :48.58 and took the 400-meter hurdles in :55.51. Laker teammates Tom Thornton and Ben Tarbutton claimed a one-two finish in the 5,000-meter run. Thornton placed first in 15:47.50, while Tarbutton followed in 15:58.16. For the second time in three weeks, Battistella, Evan Williams, Eric Ouellette and Paul Davis won the men's 4x400-meter relay. The foursome posted a time of 3:21.99, improving upon its Bulldog Invitational time of 3:22.20. Katie Scott was a double winner for the Laker women, taking the 3,000-meter run in 10:27.12 and the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:23.35. Ashley Quick won the 5,000-meter run in 18:48.53. Amanda Pieczynski set two school records. Her time of :12.88 broke Celina Grondin's three-year-old 100-meter dash record and was good for third place. She improved upon her own 200-meter dash record with a fifth-place time of :26.30. Jill Walton competed in the javelin throw for the second time in her career and improved upon her school record by nearly 12 feet. She had a throw of 105-1 and placed fifth. Taylor Patton placed third in the women's high jump (5-2 ¼), while Shelby LaBuhn was third in the women's triple jump (34-0 ¼). Paul Davis was third in the men's 200-meter dash (:22.25) and fifth in the 100-meter dash (:11.48). Note: Results of men's discus, women's discus and women's hammer are not available.
