UNIVERSITY CENTER - Lake Superior State sophomore Katie Scott placed second and met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time by clocking a time of 11:23.67 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the first day of competition Thursday at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships.

Scott finished behind Saginaw Valley State sophomore Maggie Stalker, who posted an 11:18.37. Scott's fastest time of the year is 11:16.45, which is ranked among the top 20 nationally.

Junior Evan Williams also met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time by recording a 1:56.07 and placing seventh in the men's 800-meter run preliminaries. Freshman Eric Ouellette was eighth in 1:56.86, and both Lakers advanced to today's GLIAC finals.

Sophomore Paul Davis qualified ninth in the men's 100-meter dash preliminaries. His time of :11.00 tied a school record set by Mark Youngs in 1996 and Quentin Hunt in 2001. Davis also qualified eighth in the 200-meter dash preliminaries at :22.24.

Senior DJ Battistella qualified fifth in the 400-meter dash preliminaries (:49.54) and third in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries (:54.38). Junior Luke Allen qualified 11th in the 1,500-meter run preliminaries (4:08.58).

Freshman Rick Koon cleared 6-3 1/4 to place sixth in the men's high jump, while junior Dana Skytta tied for seventh by clearing 6-1 1/4. Senior Ben Tarbutton was seventh in the men's 10,000-meter run (32:36.01). Sophomore Amanda Pieczynski improved upon her women's 100-meter dash school record by placing 15th in :12.75.

Sophomore Jill Walton shattered her own javelin throw record, placing third with a throw of 128-7.
