May 4, 2007 MIDLAND - Lake Superior State junior Adam Smith was the top qualifier in the men's 400-meter dash, and freshman Travis Baril tied school records in the high jump and triple jump during the first day of competition at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday at Northwood University. Smith clocked a :48.83 to earn the top seed in the finals. LSSU senior Marc Small also advanced to the finals in the 800 by qualifying sixth in 1:57.29. Freshman Darryl Byrge qualified fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of :56.87. Baril cleared 6-6 to place third in the high jump and tie his own school record. He also tied the triple jump record of 44-8 and finished fifth. Former Laker Derek Sandahl set the original triple jump mark in 2001. Freshman Katie Scott placed second in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:23.67), while Mandi DeBlock was fifth (11:58.27) and Stephanie Riedel ninth (12:37.55). Freshman Amanda Pieczynski claimed the last qualifying spot in the 100-meter dash by placing eighth in :13.36. Senior Scott Hosie finished sixth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:46.37), while freshman Jake Hoover was ninth in 10:16.13.
