Freeman wins Bulldog Invitational

BIG RAPIDS - Lake Superior State senior Amanda Freeman completed a 5K race at Katke Golf Course in 19:48.30 to win the Bulldog Cross Country Invitational Friday.

Freeman edged Jamie Clark of Lansing Community College by a half second. Only three women finished under 20:00.

LSSU's Amy Busfield was 10th in 20:24.40, while Heather Hammond (22:17.90) was 28th, Anarae Cole (22:47.50) 35th, Alexis Berke (23:06.60) 40th, Nikki Martus (23:40.40) 45th, Leslie Machado (24:01.30) 48th, Lisa Mazzola (24:02.90) 49th and Stephanie Kilgore (27:53.70) 58th. The Lakers were fourth in the team standings. Ferris State had four top-10 finishers and won the women's meet.

Junior Jerry Drennen clocked a 27:28.20 on the 8K course to place 30th and lead the LSSU men's team. The Laker men were seventh in the team standings, while Central Michigan University, with five top-10 finishers, won the meet.

Rounding out the LSSU men's finishers were: 36. Colin Vohlken, 27:44.90; 44. Dave Partyke, 28:03.70; 45. Anthony Pavicic, 28:04.20; 51. Justin Gretzinger, 28:29.60; 60. Ryan Clapp, 29.14.30; 67. Erin Evans, 30:38.0; 72. Matt VanEffen, 32:40.10.

The Lakers have a week off, then compete in the Upper Peninsula Finals on Friday, Oct. 11, in Marquette.
