Oct. 21, 2006 ARLINGTON, Ohio - The Lake Superior State men's cross country team placed seventh among 12 teams, while the Laker women were ninth among 13 teams at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships held Saturday at Sycamore Springs Golf Course near Columbus, Ohio. Freshman Katie Scott placed ninth in 22:05 to lead all Laker finishers. Junior Tom Thornton was 24th in 25:48.6 to post the Laker men's top finish and beat his personal best time by 34 seconds. Scott, who earned All-GLIAC Second Team honors, was the No. 2 freshman to cross the finish line. She shattered LSSU's school record on a 6K course by 85 seconds and ran a 5K split of 18:22 that would have broken the Lakers' school record on the track. "We were pleased with how both teams raced," LSSU coach Steve Eles said. "The women's team scored 37 fewer points than last season and ended up placing one place lower than last year. Every woman on our team ran a personal best this weekend, and that is all we can ask for. We are looking forward to the next few years as this year's team was comprised of eight freshmen, two sophomores and one junior. I believe we will only continue to improve as we gain more experience. The LSSU men's squad ran without Ben Tarbutton, who was injured. Tarbutton was the first LSSU male to break 26 minutes on an 8K course since 2002. "All of the men also ran personal bests this weekend," Eles said. "Every athlete on the team ran a personal best, which is a credit to the hard work these young men and women have been putting in thus far this season." Grand Valley State won both team titles.
