Ferris State men claim win in Lakers' home finale

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team battled back from a 15-point deficit, but Ferris State converted a three-point play at 2:34 and hit a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to secure a 68-62 victory Saturday at Bud Cooper Gym.

After falling behind 35-20, LSSU scored 12 unanswered points to cut the lead to 35-32 with 14:40 remaining in the second half. Anthony Gibson hit a three-pointer at 11:50 to give the Lakers their first lead of the game, 41-39. Mark Morse's three-pointer made it 44-40 with 11:04 to go.

FSU's Anthony Sydnor canned a three-pointer, and Jason Holder hit a jumper to extend a one-point Bulldogs lead to six points, 60-54, with 3:35 to go. Holder and Jessie York made Ferris State's key shots down the stretch.

Sydnor led FSU (10-16 overall, 8-9 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) with 23 points, and York followed with 15. Ferris State shot 47.1 percent from the field, including 7-of-15 from three-point range. The Bulldogs made 13-of-19 free throws and out-rebounded the Lakers, 30-29.

Morse led LSSU with 23 points, while Ryan Kuhl followed with 17 and Tim VanOudheusden added 14. Lake Superior State shot 44.9 percent from the field, including 4-of-11 from behind the arc. The Lakers made 14-of-18 free throws.

LSSU (8-18 overall, 5-12 GLIAC) closes out the season at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Northwood.
