SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team tuned up for its crucial Upper Peninsula road trip by beating Northland Baptist Bible College 90-39 Thursday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. It was LSSU's final home game of the 2007-08 season. The Lakers (9-15) are tied for third place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division heading into Saturday's game at Northern Michigan. They are vying for their first GLIAC Tournament bid since 2002. Freshman Micah Hudson made 5-of-8 three-point attempts and scored a season-high 21 points to lead Lake Superior State. The crowd favorite of the night was senior Tom Thornton, a first-year walk-on from the cross country team who was playing in his final home game. Thornton totaled a season-high 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals in his eighth appearance of the season. Freshman Matt Romatz added 10 points for the Lakers, and sophomore Scott Perkins had nine. Freshman Nathan Householder and junior Anthony Gibson totaled seven rebounds each. Householder also had five assists. Joel Widmer scored 18 points to lead Northland Baptist (10-16). The Pioneers shot 28.3 percent from the field, including 3-of-26 from three-point range. They made 6-of-15 free throws. LSSU shot 47.4 percent from the field, including 11-of-25 from three-point range. The Lakers were 7-of-13 at the free-throw line and dominated the boards, 56-30. |
