Buckeyes have their way with Lakers

Jan. 16, 2004

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Lake Superior State hockey team fended off a vicious Ohio State attack for 25 minutes Friday. But once the Buckeyes got rolling, there was no stopping them.

Scott May had two goals and an assist as Ohio State (14-10-0 overall, 9-7-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) scored three goals during a 4:14 span of the second period to break open a scoreless game.

The Buckeyes, who took out their frustration on LSSU after suffering two losses at Michigan last weekend, added two more goals in the third period as the Lakers (6-8-5 overall, 4-7-3 CCHA) suffered their third shutout loss of the season. Dave Steckel, Andrew Schembri and Bryce Anderson scored OSU's final three goals.

LSSU starting goaltender Matt Violin (4-6-3) stopped all 19 shots in the first period and 8-of-11 in the second period. Jeff Jakaitis took over for Violin in the third period and totaled 10 saves.

OSU goaltender Mike Betz (11-9-0) totaled 17 saves.

Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.

LSSU and Ohio State meet again Saturday at 8:05 p.m. The original starting time was changed due to the Buckeyes' basketball game against Minnesota at the Value City Arena.
