Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State hockey team out-played Providence for two periods, but the effort wasn't enough to make up for any early 3-0 deficit in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Friars in a non-conference game at Taffy Abel Arena.

Providence (10-8-6) got goals from Dinos Stamoulis, Jonathan Goodwin and Colin McDonald to break open the game during the first 12 minutes. The Friars rattled LSSU early as Stamoulis scored off a Laker turnover in Lake Superior State's zone. Goodwin's goal at 9:09 was the only power-play goal of the night.

Lake Superior State sophomore Jon Booras, who scored the Lakers' lone goal at 18:10 of the first period, picked up the puck in LSSU's zone and skated in front of Friars goaltender Bobby Goepfert. With a defender covering him, he spun in reverse and back-handed the puck into the net. Sophomore Steve McJannet drew the only assist.

LSSU (6-11-5) out-shot Providence 21-13 during the last two periods, but failed to score. The Lakers were 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Friars finished 1-for-4.

LSSU goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (2-4-2) totaled 22 saves, while Goepfert (9-4-2) finished with 29.

LSSU walk-on forward Brian Gibes was in the lineup for the first time this season.

Providence also defeated Lake Superior State 3-0 Friday.

The Lakers return to Central Collegiate Hockey Association action Jan. 30-31 at Michigan.
