Box Score

DETROIT - Two days after an offensive shootout in Sault Ste. Marie, Lake Superior State and Michigan State faced off in a defensive battle at Joe Louis Arena.

Saturday's rematch went much more according to script as LSSU freshman goaltender Jeff Jakaitis totaled 45 saves, but came up short in a 2-1 loss to the Spartans.

MSU's A.J. Thelen scored the first goal of the game at 18:19 of the first period. Jakaitis compiled 13 saves in both of the first two periods to keep the Lakers in the game, and LSSU finally tied it on Barnabas Birkeland's first career goal at 4:36 of the first period. Trent Campbell drew the only assist.

Spartan Jim Slater broke the 1-1 tie with an unassisted goal at 10:01 of the third period. LSSU pulled Jakaitis in favor of an extra attacker with one minute remaining, but failed to get any good scoring opportunities.

The game, which aired live on Fox Detroit, was exciting from start to finish and included the first fight of the season. Laker Bo Cheesman and Spartan Joe Markusen received five-minute major penalties and game disqualifications at the 6:31 mark of the third period. Cheesman will have to sit out next Friday's game at Bowling Green.

The Lakers finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while Michigan State was 0-for-1.

LSSU dropped to 6-15-5 overall, 4-13-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association, while MSU improved to 17-14-1 overall and 13-8-1 in the CCHA.
