SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State defeated Notre Dame 3-0 Friday in Game 1 of its final regular-season home hockey series. LSSU goaltender Jeff Jakaitis totaled 21 saves for his first career shutout victory.

Jakaitis (5-7-4) also has two shutout ties to his credit.

"Jakaitis only had to make a few really good saves," LSSU coach Frank Anzalone said. "Everyone just really helped him out. I am sure he is very happy with the way everyone played in front of him."

Mike Adamek scored LSSU's first goal at 2:42 of the first period on assists by Steve McJannet and Colin Nicholson.

Alex Dunn made it 2-0 with 53 seconds left in the opening period. He scored his fifth goal of the season on assists by Tim Krueckl and Jon Booras.

Colin Nicholson tallied the Lakers' insurance goal at 10:42 of the second period. It was Nicholson's sixth of the season, and Adamek and Krueckl drew assists.

They supported each other both offensively and defensively," Anzalone said of his charges. "Nobody was ever left alone. Even if one guy made a mistake, the other guys picked it up. That is the best game we have played by far."

Notre Dame goaltender David Brown (13-6-3) totaled 14 saves in 30:42. Morgan Cey had four saves in 29:18.

The Lakers improved to 9-17-7 overall and 7-15-5 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. They moved within two points of 10th-place Ferris State and are still unsure of who they play in the first round of the CCHA Playoffs.

Notre Dame dropped to 17-12-4 overall, 13-11-3 in the CCHA. The Irish had already clinched home ice for the first round of the playoffs due to Bowling Green's victory over Western Michigan on Thursday.

Neither team took a penalty in the game.

LSSU and UND play again Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
