LSSU tops Bowling Green, 4-2

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State out-shot Bowling Green 17-3 in the first period and never looked back in Friday's 4-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory at Taffy Abel Arena.

LSSU senior Tim Krueckl tied the game 2-2 with a goal at 14:08 of the second period, and sophomore Nathan Ward put the Lakers up 3-2 by scoring at 18:05. The Lakers (4-3-2 overall, 2-3-0 CCHA) shut Bowling Green out in the third period, and secured the win on Bo Cheesman's empty-net goal with 30 seconds remaining.

The victory marked LSSU's best start since the 1995-96 season when they won six in a row to move to 7-2.

Trent Campbell scored the Lakers' first goal at 6:27 of the first period. Bowling Green (3-5-2 overall, 2-4-1 CCHA) answered with two goals by Bryan Dobek. Mike Falk assisted on both Falcon goals.

Lakers Mark Adamek, Ryan Reid, Ren Fauci, Adrian Kremblewski, Cheesman, Campbell, Jon Booras and Kory Scoran also drew assists in the game.


LSSU out-shot BGSU 35-18. LSSU goaltender Matt Violin (2-3-2) totaled 16 saves in his first CCHA victory of the season.

Bowling Green goalie Jordan Sigalet had 31 saves.

LSSU was 0-for-4 on the power play, while Bowling Green was 0-for-3.

Both teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
