Lakers win first CCHA road game 4-1

OMAHA, Nebraska-Lake Superior State (3-3-2, 1-3-0 CCHA) ended its regular season Central Collegiate Hockey Association road winless streak when it defeated Nebraska-Omaha (1-5-1, 1-4-1 CCHA) 4-1 Saturday night. The streak began after a 5-3 win over Alaska-Fairbanks December 9, 2000.

The Lakers came out strong in the first period to make up for Friday night's 7-1 loss. Jon Booras helped the Lakers to take an early lead by scoring his first goal of the season at 6:10 of the first period. Freshman Barnabas Birkeland was credited with an assist and picked up his first point of the season. Transfer senior Tim Krueckl also assisted on the goal.

LSSU held their 1-0 lead through late in the second period. Bo Cheesman increased the lead to two when he scored at 17:59 of the second period. Trent Campbell and Nathan Ward assisted on the goal.

Kory Scoran rifled a shot from the blue line to help the Lakers to take a 3-0 when he scored a power play goal at 11:43 of the third period. Campbell and Ward picked up their second assists of the evening.

The Mavericks ruined freshman Jeff Jakaitis's perfect game when Mike Lefley scored at 13:29 of the third period. UNO pulled their goalie with 22 seconds left in the third period. Dominic Osman picked up his fifth goal of the season when he scored an empty net goal with seven seconds left in the game.

Jakaitis picked up his second win of the season and moves to 2-0 for the season. He made 22 saves. UNO's Chris Holt was credited with the loss and made 27 saves.

Lake Superior State was 1-7 on the power play. UNO was 1-4. The Lakers out-shot the Mavs for the second night in a row 31 to 23.

Trent Campbell was named Perani Cup first star of the game. Nathan Ward was second star and Jakaitis third.

The Lakers continue next weekend with CCHA action when they play Bowling Green at home Friday November 14 at Taffy Abel Arena at 7:05 p.m.
