Oct. 18, 2003

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sophomore Steve McJannet scored with 1:33 remaining in overtime Saturday to give the Lake Superior State hockey team a 3-2 victory over Canisius and end the Lakers' three-game string of ties with the Golden Griffins.

LSSU (1-0-1) came back from a 2-0 first-period deficit to defeat Canisius (0-2-2). Sophomore Nathan Ward cut the lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal at 16:57 of the second period, and freshman Trent Campbell tied it at 19:16 of the third.

Sophomore Jon Booras assisted on both of LSSU's regulation goals. Sophomore Kory Scoran drew an assist on Campbell's goal, while McJannet's goal was unassisted.

LSSU, which also came from behind to tie Canisius 1-1 on Friday, successfully pulled the goalie in favor of an extra attacker in both games of this year's series. The Lakers also out-shot Canisius in both games, building a 30-21 advantage on Saturday and dominating 70-39 for the weekend. They hold a slim 1-0-3 lead in their all-time series against the Griffins.

LSSU junior Matt Violin (1-0-1) totaled 19 saves to earn the win on Saturday. Losing goalie Max Buetow (0-1-0) stopped 27 shots.

Both teams were 1-for-5 on the power play. Joey Coccimiglio scored an even-strength goal at 6:01 and Michael Cohen made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 13:35 of the first period for Canisius. Jon Durno and Ryan Corcoran drew assists.

The Lakers play host to Miami in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association home opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24.
