Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Lake Superior State scored one goal when dominating the first two periods of Saturday's Central Collegiate Hockey Association game, then battled through a hard-fought third period to tie Notre Dame 2-2 and end a seven-game losing streak against the Irish.

Laker junior forward Bo Cheesman scored the game-tying goal at 17:15 of the third period. LSSU's Ryan Branham and Barnabas Birkeland kept the puck in UND's zone, creating Cheesman's scoring opportunity. Trent Campbell drew the only assist.

LSSU freshman Dominic Osman gave LSSU a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 2:43 of the second period. Kory Scoran and Campbell had assists for the Lakers (4-4-4 overall, 2-4-2 CCHA).

Notre Dame (6-3-2 overall, 5-3-2 CCHA) tied the game 1-1 on a power-play goal by Wes O'Neill at 13:28 of the second period and took a 2-1 lead on Brett Lebda's goal at 12:29 of the third period.

LSSU out-shot Notre Dame 41-36 as Laker freshman goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (2-0-2) totaled 34 saves. UND netminder David Brown (4-2-2) stopped 39 shots.

For the series, the Lakers held a 60-59 edge in shots on goal. Last year, the Irish out-shot LSSU 106-52.

Lake Superior State picked up one point in the CCHA standings for the weekend. Notre Dame also fended off a LSSU comeback Friday, but pulled out the 5-3 win with two unanswered goals.

The Lakers are off during the Thanksgiving weekend. They play host to Northern Michigan at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, then travel to Marquette on Dec. 6.

  • The 2-2 tie is the first point recorded by the Lakers in Notre Dame since a 1-1 tie back in January of 2000.
  • With his sixth goal of the season, Freshman Dominic Osman leads the team in goals.
  • With his assist on Bo Cheesman's third period goal, Trent Campbell now leads the team in total scoring with nine points.
