Rick Schofield

Jan. 5, 2008

EAST LANSING - Nathan Perkovich, Steven Kaunisto and Rick Schofield scored goals for the Lake Superior State hockey team, which tied Michigan State 3-3 in overtime on Saturday during a televised game played front of 5,667 fans at Munn Arena.

LSSU (2-12-4 overall, 0-9-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) not only rallied back from Friday's 8-2 loss, but tied an opponent on the road for the third time in four games.

In addition to timely scoring, LSSU held Michigan State's conference-leading power-play unit to 1-for-7 for the night (MSU was 4-for-11 for the weekend). The Lakers were 0-for-3 with the man-advantage on Saturday.

LSSU freshman goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson was stellar in goal, totaling 36 saves, including 20 in the opening period. He also assisted on Perkovich's goal, which gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead 24 seconds into the game. Simon Gysbers had the other assist.

Although Mahoney-Wilson helped LSSU dodge a few bullets in the first period, Lake Superior State still trailed 2-1 after giving up even-strength goals to MSU's Bryan Lerg at 14:13 and Chris Mueller at 15:23.

LSSU came back to dominate the second period, out-shooting the Spartans 15-6, garnering several quality scoring chances and tying the game 2-2 on Kaunisto's shot from the point at 15:53. Dillin Stonehouse had the only assist on Kaunisto's goal.

Schofield snagged teammate Zac MacVoy's pass to the front of the net and beat MSU goaltender Jeff Lerg to put the Lakers in front, 3-2, at 1:12 of the third period. Dan Eves was credited with the other assist.

Spartan Mike Ratchuk tied it at 4:16 with the only power-play goal of the game.

LSSU out-shot MSU in overtime, 4-2. The final 30 seconds of the game included a scuffle that sent Gysbers, Perkovich, Josh Sim and Troy Schwab of LSSU, and Daniel Vukovic, Tim Kennedy, Mueller and Justin Abdelkader of MSU to the lockerroom with roughing minors.

Jeff Lerg totaled 36 saves for the Spartans (13-5-3).

LSSU returns home to play host to Bowling Green State at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 5:05 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.
