Jan. 7, 2005

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State clung to its sixth-place spot in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings by skating to a 1-1 tie with Notre Dame on Friday at Taffy Abel Arena.

LSSU (6-11-2 overall, 5-6-2 CCHA) moved a point ahead of Alaska-Fairbanks, which lost Friday to Bowling Green, and is now tied with Michigan State heading into Saturday's 7:05 p.m. rematch with the Fighting Irish (5-10-5 overall, 3-8-4 CCHA).

Laker senior Bo Cheesman scored LSSU's lone goal at 7:24 of the first period. Steve McJannet and Colin Nicholson drew assists.

UND's Noah Babin tied the game at 5:23 of the third period, firing a shot past Laker goaltender Jeff Jakaitis just after Notre Dame's Matt Amado won a face-off in LSSU's zone.

Lake Superior State had several scoring opportunities during the final moments of the third period and in overtime, but failed to score. UND netminder Morgan Cey (3-5-4) stopped two shots by McJannet during the Lakers' final flurry.

Cey totaled 25 saves, while Jakaitis (4-10-1) stopped 32 shots, including 13 in the second period when the Lakers killed off a five-minute major called on Mark Adamek.

LSSU and UND were a combined -for-8 on the power play.
