Lakers, Golden Griffins skate to 2-2 tie

Junior forward Kyle Anderson

Jan. 10, 2003

SAULT STE. MARIE - Two goals by junior forward Kyle Anderson weren't enough to carry the Lake Superior State hockey team past Canisius, which rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to tie Friday's non-conference game 2-2 in overtime.

Anderson, who scored his first goal of the season last Friday against Michigan State, tipped Steve McJannett's shot past Canisious goalie Bryan Worosz to give LSSU a 1-0 lead at 5:16 of the second period. Jon Booras added the other assist on the power-play goal.

Anderson also scored an even-strength goal at 15:27 of the second period on assists by Jeremy Bachusz and Colin Nicholson. Canisius (6-12-1) cut the lead to 2-1 when Andrew Dawe scored with 56 seconds remaining in the second period.

Worosz made 12 saves, and Canisius, played much more disciplined hockey in order to shut out the Lakers in the third period. The Golden Griffins, who average 20 penalty minutes per game, compiled six penalties after two periods, but picked up only one minor in the third.

Midway through the third stanza, Worosz deflected another Anderson shot that could easily have led to the Lakers' first hat trick since October, 1999. Instead, the Golden Griffins came back with the game-tying goal at 11:31, which came a second their sixth power play of the game had ended. Marc Bouffard scored on assists from Dawe and David Ovcjak.

LSSU goalie Terry Denike (2-3-1), who started for the first time since the Friday game at St. Lawrence on Dec. 13, totaled 23 saves, including 10 in the second period. Worosz finished with 24 saves. Both goalies stopped one shot in overtime.

LSSU (4-15-2) finished 1-for-7 on the power play, while Canisius was 0-for-6. The Golden Griffins have an all-time record of 0-3-1 against Central Collegiate Hockey Association teams. LSSU is 3-0-1 against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams this season. The Lakers and Griffs play a rematch at 7 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.
