Lakers, Golden Griffins again skate to deadlock

Junior forward Kyle Anderson

Jan. 11, 2003

SAULT STE. MARIE - Canisius scored two power-play goals in the third period to come from behind and tie Lake Superior State 4-4 Saturday in Game 2 of a non-conference hockey series at Taffy Abel Arena.

The first two meetings between the two teams both ended in draws. This time, however, Canisius (6-12-2 overall, 6-6 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) was aided by a LSSU penalty at 17:56 of the third period. The Lakers (4-15-3 overall, 1-13-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) also took a five-minute major penalty with 25 seconds remaining in overtime when Bo Cheesman was whistled for boarding.

Cheesman's hit was not malicious, but left his opponent bleeding. It was a frustrating end to what started out as a great night for the sophomore forward, who scored a short-handed goal at 5:14 of the first period for a 1-0 Laker lead and tallied a power-play goal at 13:07 of the same stanza to make it 3-1.

LSSU's Kyle Anderson also scored a power-play goal in the first period for his fourth goal in four games. Sault, Ont., native Fred Coccimiglio scored for Canisious at 8:44.

The Golden Griffins cut the lead to 3-2 when Rob Martin scored at 3:37 of the second period. LSSU's Colin Nicholson answered with a power-play goal at 8:10.

Canisius out-shot LSSU 10-2 in the third period and got power-play goals from Coccimiglio at 10:57 and Andrew Dawe at 18:58.

Canisious out-shot LSSU 28-22 for the night. Griffs goalie Bryan Worosz (6-9-2) totaled 18 saves, while LSSU's Matt Violin (2-12-2) stopped 24 shots. Canisius was 2-for-8 on the power play, and the Lakers finished 3-for-5.

The Golden Griffins's all-time record against CCHA teams is now 0-3-2. LSSU is 3-0-2 against MAAC teams this season.

Lakers Jeremy Bachusz, Jon Booras and Ryan Reid notched two assists each.

LSSU resumes CCHA play on Friday and Saturday at Alaska Fairbanks.
