SAULT STE. MARIE - Fifteenth-ranked Lake Superior State survived a penalty-laded third period only to lose 4-3 in overtime to fifth-ranked Notre Dame on Friday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Notre Dame improved to 18-4-1 overall and 12-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. LSSU, which is now 1-1-1 in three straight overtime contests, dropped to 13-7-3 overall and 7-5-3 in the CCHA.

The Lakers and Irish play Game 2 of their CCHA series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie.

LSSU came from behind to tie the game on three different occasions. Freshman Nik Sellers scored an unassisted goal at 3:58 of the second period to even the score at 1-1. Senior captain Barnabas Birkeland made it 2-2 with a power-play goal at 14:39 of the same period. Nathan Perkovich and Jeff Rainville assisted on Birkeland's goal.

Dan Eves knotted it, 3-3, by scoring 57 seconds into the third period. Derek R. Smith and Ryan Baird had the assists.

At 7:59 of the third period, Perkovich took a 5-minute checking-from-behind and game misconduct penalties, but the Lakers gave up only two shots on goal during the Irish power play.

LSSU came up empty on a two-minute power play that started at 14:07 (Steven Kaunisto hit the post), then killed off another penalty during the final three minutes of regulation. The Lakers held Notre Dame scoreless on four power plays, including three in the third period. LSSU was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.

Notre Dame's Erik Condra skated in alone from the left circle and tallied the game-winner at 3:24 of overtime. Evan Rankin, Ryan Thang and Jason Paige also scored for the Irish.

Notre Dame goaltender David Brown totaled 21 saves, including 10 in the third period. LSSU netminder Jeff Jakaitis had 25 saves, including 12 in the first period and 10 in the third. UND out-shot Lake Superior State, 29-24.
