Colin Nicholson

Jan. 14, 2005

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State and Alabama-Huntsville skated to a 3-3 tie on Friday in the first meeting between the two hockey teams. The hard-skating Chargers came back from a 3-1 deficit.

UAH (8-5-4 overall), which is currently the top team in College Hockey America, jumped to a 1-0 lead on an even-strength goal by Steve Canter at 8:36 of the first period. LSSU (7-11-3 overall) tied it at 16:36 on a short-handed goal by Colin Nicholson.

Nicholson's line was hot again early in the second period as senior Bo Cheesman made it 2-1 at 5:58. Steve McJannet and Nicholson drew assists on the even-strength goal.

Laker Jon Booras added a goal at 9:57 to make it 3-1, but the Chargers answered 21 seconds later on a Chris Martini goal.

UAH standout Jared Ross tied in 3-3 at 3:29 of the third period on his 13th goal of the season.

LSSU out-shot the Chargers 34-27, but was out-shot 9-5 in the third period.

The overtime period ended with a brief brawl that included Ross, and Lakers Alex Dunn and Jeff Rainville. Every player who was on the ice was given double minors and 10-minute misconduct penalties.

LSSU was 0-for-4 and UAH 0-for-2 on the power play. Laker goaltender Matt Violin, who started for the first time since suffering a knee injury against Northern Michigan on Nov. 26, totaled 24 saves. UAH goaltender Scott Munroe stopped 31 shots, including 23 in the first two periods.

Monroe stopped two shots on a Nathan Ward break-away in overtime.

LSSU is now 1-5-1 in non-conference games.

The Lakers and Chargers meet again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
