Michigan picks up third victory over Lakers

SAULT STE. MARIE - Michigan scored three unanswered goals in the first period and held on for a 4-1 victory over Lake Superior State in Thursday's Central Collegiate Hockey Association game at Taffy Abel Arena.

The Wolverines (16-6-1 overall, 10-4-1 CCHA) built a 4-0 lead before Laker Kyle Anderson ruined the shutout with his fifth goal of the season at 8:08 of the third period.

David Moss, Jeff Tambellini and Eric Nystrom scored in the first period for U-M. John Shouneyia made it 4-0 during the first minute of the third period. Shouneyia and Tambellini also had assists for the night.

B.J. Pelkey and Jon Booras assisted on Anderson's goal.

Winning goalie Al Montoya (16-6-1) totaled 16 saves. Matt Violin (2-14-3) had 26 saves in the loss. He was replaced by William Ciccone midway through the third period. Ciccone had two saves.

LSSU (4-17-4 overall, 1-15-1 CCHA) was 0-for-3 on the power play, while Michigan was 0-for-2.

Michigan is 3-0 against the Lakers this season and has won five straight against LSSU since last season. U-M and Lake Superior State play a rematch at 7:35 p.m. Saturday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The game will be broadcast live on WSUE 101.3 FM and simulcast on
