Jan. 28, 2006

SAULT STE. MARIE - Senior Colin Nicholson scored two goals, including a first-period short-handed marker, as the 19th-ranked Lake Superior State hockey team defeated Bowling Green 4-2 Saturday to complete its fifth series sweep of the season.

The Lakers improved to 14-7-5 overall and 10-7-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, while Bowling Green fell to 12-16-1 overall and 8-13-1 in the CCHA.

The teams were tied 2-2 after two periods, but Jon Booras scored the game-winner at 3:07 of the third period for a 3-2 lead. Nicholson added an insurance goal at 4:35.

Nicholson also scored the game's first goal at 10:36 of the first period.

BGSU's Derek Whitmore tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 8:18 of the second period, but LSSU's Trent Campbell answered with a power-play goal at 10:39.

The Lakers had a chance to put the game out of reach earlier, but gave up a short-handed goal to Falcon Brandon Svendsen at 11:11 of the middle stanza.

Both teams totaled 10 shots on goal in the third period, but Bowling Green generated most of its offense during the last two minutes while playing with the goalie pulled in favor of an extra attacker.

LSSU and BGSU were 1-for-5 on the power play. Laker goaltender Jeff Jakaitis totaled 32 saves, while Falcon netminder Jimmy Spratt had 30.

LSSU assists were credited to Jeff Rainville, Barnabas Birkeland, Nathan Ward, Dominic Osman, Campbell and Ren Fauci.

Nicholson finished with three goals and one assist for the weekend, while Osman had a goal and three assists.

The Lakers begin a two-week road trip on Feb. 3 at Nebraska-Omaha.
