Lakers fall, but have eighth-ranked Buckeyes on the ropes

Ren Fauci

Feb. 4, 2005

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State's power play came back to life in front of the second-biggest home crowd of the season in Taffy Abel Ice Arena.

Ren Fauci scored at 16:15 of the second period to end the Lakers' 11-game scoreless stretch with the man advantage, but the lone power-play goal wasn't enough to get by eighth-ranked Ohio State, which won Friday's Central College Hockey Association game, 3-1.

OSU's Rod Pelley scored an even-strength goal at 3:27 of the first period, and Buckeye Domenic Maiani made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 11:54.

Fauci cut the margin to 2-1 as Mark Adamek and Colin Nicholson drew assists. LSSU (7-14-6 overall, 6-8-5 CCHA) threatened several times from that point on. The Lakers tried pulling goaltender Jeff Jakaitis in favor of an extra attacker with 33 seconds to go, but were already killing a penalty and couldn't mount much pressure during the last two minutes of the game.

Pelley secured the OSU victory with an empty-net power-play goal at 19:41 of the third period.

LSSU out-shot Ohio State 24-22. OSU goaltender Dave Caruso totaled 23 saves to earn the win, while Jakaitis had 19 saves for the Lakers.

Ohio State (19-7-3 overall, 15-4-1 CCHA), which trails CCHA leader Michigan by two points in the league standings, was 2-for-5 on the power play and held LSSU to 1-for-7 with the man-advantage. The Buckeyes came into the series with the league's top-rated power-play and penalty-killing units.

The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
