OXFORD, Ohio - Lake Superior State University's hockey team came into Saturday night's game locked in a three-way tie with Miami and Michigan State for seventh place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Miami made sure to leave the Lakers trailing by two points in the standings early on in the contest.

Miami (13-15-4, 9-12-3 CCHA) made good on its first five power-play opportunities in the first period of the game. In the midst of Miami's run, the Lakers (8-16-6, 7-10-5 CCHA) tallied two goals, one by Jon Booras at 10:40 in the first, and another by Dan Eves at 13:43. After taking the first period 5-2, the Red Hawks cruised to an 8-3 victory at Goggin Arena to split the series.

Derek R Smith added a late goal for the Lakers, with Nathan Ward drawing an assist. Colin Nicholson, Kory Scoran, Mike Adamek, and Alex Dunn all had helpers on the Lakers' other two goals.

Matt Violin (3-2-3) took the loss for LSSU, allowing five goals while facing 22 shots and logging 19:47. Jeff Jakaitis played the final two periods for the Lakers and allowed three goals in 27 shots. The Lakers also skated for 13 seconds in the first period with an empty net, but no goal resulted due to the extra attacker. The Red Hawks finished 6-for-7 on the power play, becoming only the 22nd team to score six power play goals in one game. The Lakers were 2-for-7 on the power play.

Lake Superior State will return home to play the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19.
