Feb. 14, 2003

MARQUETTE - For the second time in three outings this season, Northern Michigan's hockey team came from behind with two third-period goals to beat Lake Superior State.

On Friday night at the Berry Events Center, the Wildcats got third-period goals from Chris Gobert and Terry Harrison to beat LSSU 2-1. Earlier this season, two late Wildcat goals led to a 3-2 victory over the Lakers. NMU (15-12-2 overall, 11-9-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) reclaimed the Father Cappo Cup by improving to 3-0 against Lake Superior State this season.

LSSU sophomore Derek Seal scored at 6:25 of the first period to give the Lakers (4-21-4 overall, 1-19-1 CCHA) a 1-0 lead. Bo Cheesman and Chris Peterson assisted on Seal's first goal of the season.

The Lakers maintained a slim lead until Gobert scored at 5:48 of the third period. Gobert also assisted on Harrison's game-winning goal at 13:18. Dirk Southern assisted on both goals.

NMU out-shot LSSU 9-1 in the third period and 29-12 for the night.

LSSU goalie Matt Violin (2-17-3) went to the bench in favor on an extra attacker with 1:08 remaining. The Wildcats failed to score, but hit the post with approximately 30 seconds to go.

NMU goalie Tuomas Tarkki (2-1-0) totaled 11 saves for the win. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.

The Lakers and Wildcats face off Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena. The game will be broadcast live on WSUE 101.3 FM and simulcast on
