Alex Dunn

Feb. 18, 2005

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State lost momentum after a goal was disallowed early in the third period, and Nebraska-Omaha went on to score three unanswered goals to win Friday's Central Collegiate Hockey Association game, 5-2.

LSSU's Alex Dunn scored at 4:49 of the first period to give the Lakers (8-17-6 overall, 7-11-5 CCHA) at 1-0 lead. UNO's Mick Lawrence and Bill Thomas scored at 14:28 of the first period and 5:18 of the second to put the Mavericks ahead, 2-1.

Trent Campbell tied it 2-2 at 10:12 of the second period, but Lawrence and Thomas answered again -- six minutes apart in the third period to make it 4-2. Both of Lawrence's goals were power-play markers as the Mavs finished 3-for-7 with the man-advantage.

UNO (16-12-3 overall, 12-10-3 CCHA) put the game out of reach on Alex Nikiforuk's goal at 16:23 of the third period.

Bo Cheesman's goal at 3:08 of the third period was disallowed due to an off-sides call that negated a Laker 3-2 lead. The Lakers then went on a power play due to a tripping penalty on Kaleb Betts but failed to score. They finished 0-for-8 on the power play.

LSSU out-shot the Mavs 25-20 through two periods, but UNO dominated the third period, 18-3. Laker goaltender Matt Violin took the loss with 33 saves. Winning goalie Chris Holt stopped 26 shots.

LSSU and UNO play Game 2 of the series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.
