Feb. 23, 2006

SAULT STE. MARIE - Fifth-ranked Michigan State extended its win streak to six games and its unbeaten streak to eight games by edging Lake Superior State 3-2 Thursday in the Lakers' regular-season home finale on at Taffy Abel Arena.

LSSU (15-12-6 overall, 11-12-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) closes out the regular season with another game against MSU (20-10-7 overall, 14-7-6 CCHA) at 2:05 p.m. Saturday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

All 12 seniors played for LSSU, which suffered its fourth straight loss but is still contending for home ice for the first round of the CCHA Playoffs.

The Lakers, who have been giving up goals in spurts during its recent losing skid, allowed MSU's Bryan Lerg and Drew Miller to score 23 seconds apart for a 3-1 Spartan lead midway through the second period.

MSU's Chris Mueller scored the first goal of the game at 1:43 of the first period. Laker Trent Campbell tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 6:40 of the second period, but Lerg regained the Spartans' one-goal lead at 12:12.

The Lakers out-shot MSU 11-3 in the first period, but finished 1-for-7 on the power play. They closed the gap to 3-2 on Nathan Ward's short-handed goal at 13:57 of the third period. Campbell drew the only assist on the goal.

LSSU pulled goaltender Jeff Jakaitis during the 1:20, but failed to score a goal. Jakaitis finished with 19 saves, while MSU netminder Jeff Lerg totaled 28 saves. The Spartans were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

One of the highlights of the game for LSSU was senior Eric Hill's scoring chance in the first period. Miller picked up a hooking penalty that negated Hill's possible goal, but the effort brought the Lakers' season-high crowd of 3,084 to its feet. It was the first appearance of the season and fourth overall for Hill, a Sault Ste. Marie native.

Alex Dunn and Derek A. Smith assisted on Campbell's goal.
