Lakers sweep Nanooks

Dan Eves

Feb. 23, 2008

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State hockey team defeated Alaska 5-3 Saturday to accomplish its first series sweep of the season. All three Laker seniors garnered at least a point to highlight LSSU's annual Senior Night festivities.

Lake Superior State (8-18-6 overall, 6-15-5 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) stormed to a 3-0 lead in the first period, out-shooting the Nanooks 17-2.

Alaska (8-19-5 overall, 8-16-4 CCHA) fired back with two goals in the second period and one in the third to tie it, 3-3. LSSU seniors Jason Blain and Dan Eves secured the win with goals at 2:56 and 7:23 of the third period. Fellow senior Justin Gutwald had the second assist on Eves' goal.

Eves finished with a goal and an assist, and hit two posts during the game. He had the first assist and Steve Oleksy the second on Rick Schofield's goal at 6:29 of the first period. Schofield also tallied the game-winner during Friday's 2-1 overtime victory.

John Scrymgeour scored LSSU's next two goals. Blain had the only assist on his first goal at 7:52 of the first period -- a 4-on-4 marker. Scrymgeour made it 3-0 with a short-handed goal with one second remaining in the opening period. Simon Gysbers and Steven Kaunisto drew the assists. It was LSSU's second short-handed goal of the season and the fourth that Alaska has allowed this season.

Tyler Eckford and Dustin Sather tallied second-period goals for Alaska, and Landon Novotney tied it, 3-3, by scoring 23 seconds into the third period. Dion Knelsen assisted on all three UAF goals. Eckford's was a 5-on-3 power-play goal.

Jason Blain

Blain scored the game-winner on an assist from Chad Nehring. Eves punched in a rebound to build a two-goal LSSU cushion, and Zac MacVoy and Gutwald picked up assists.

LSSU goaltender Pat Inglis totaled 22 saves, including 10 in the second period and 10 more in the third.

Alaska starting goalie Wylie Rogers allowed three goals and totaled 14 saves in the first period. Chad Johnson, who took the loss, totaled 19 saves during the second and third periods.

Justin Gutwald

LSSU finished 0-for-5 on the power play, and Alaska was 1-for-6.

LSSU swept a series for the first time since upsetting Miami during the second round of last season's CCHA Playoffs.

The Lakers, who are 4-2-2 during the month of February, close out the regular season with a home-and-home series against Northern Michigan. They play host to the Wildcats at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Taffy Abel Arena and travel to NMU on Saturday, March 1.
