Lakers notch 3-2 road win over Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich.-- The Lake Superior State hockey team beat Western Michigan 3-2 Friday night. The Lakers notched a road victory against the Broncos for the first time since February of 2000.

Laker forward Bo Cheesman gave LSSU (9-17-7, 8-11-6 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) an early lead when he scored his fifth goal of the season at 3:48 into the first period. Trent Campbell picked up his tenth assist of the season. The Lakers went to the locker room with a one goal lead after one period of play.

Defenseman Kory Scoran lengthened the Lakers' lead to two when he rifled an explosive slap shot from the blue line over the shoulder of Bronco goaltender Daniel Bellissimo. His defensive partner Ren Fauci and forward Jon Booras assisted on the goal. Scoran's sixth goal of the season was scored at 4:52 of the second period.

Bronco Brent Walton scored WMU's (11-18-2, 6-17-2 CCHA) first goal of the night at 18:51 of the second period. Jim McNamara assisted on the goal.

The Broncos took advantage of a one man advantage early in the third period to tie the game at two. Jeff Pierce scored his seventh goal of the season on the power play 1:18 into the period. Vince Bellissimo and Ryan Mahrle assisted on the goal during a two minute high sticking penalty to Laker defenseman Ren Fauci.

Senior goaltender Matt Violin entered the game for the Lakers at 1:18 of the third period.

Laker sophomore Matt Restoule scored the game winning goal at 8:26 of the third period. Booras picked up his second assist of the night on Restoule's seventh goal of the season. Restoule was named the Perani Cup first star of the game for his efforts. Booras earned third star honors.

The Broncos out-shot LSSU 35 to 28. The Lakers were 0-6 on the power play. WMU was 1-3.

Laker goaltender Jeff Jakaitis totaled 22 saves and Violin recorded 11. Bellissimo stopped 25 of the Lakers shots.

The Lakers and Broncos will meet again Saturday night at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m.
