Lakers fall 4-2 to 14th-ranked NMU icers

MARQUETTE - Lake Superior State played its best third period in at least five games, but 14th-ranked Northern Michigan previaled with its special teams to win Friday's Central Collegiate Hockey Association game, 4-2.

NMU (19-9-7 overall, 16-7-4 CCHA), which has a lock on third place in the league, extended its lead in the Cappo Cup total-goals series, 8-5. Game 4 of the series is at 7:05 p.m Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie and will be the final home game for Laker seniors Matt Violin, Bo Cheesman and Ryan Reid.

LSSU (9-19-7 overall, 8-13-7 CCHA), which officially fell out of contention for home ice in the first round of the CCHA Playoffs, spoiled NMU goaltender Tuomas Tarkki's shutout when Colin Nicholson scored a power-play goal at 13:32 of the third period. His goal, which included assists by Derek R. Smith and Barnabas Birkeland, cut the Wildcats' lead to 4-1.

BJ Pelkey scored LSSU's second goal with four seconds remaining in the game. Reid and Mark Adamek drew assists on the power-play marker.

NMU took a 1-0 lead at 15:49 of the first period on a goal by Dusty Collins. Wildcat Andrew Contois made ith 2-0 with a short-handed goal at 6:37 of the second period, Jamie Milam added a power-play goal at 13:01. Pat Bateman scored NMU's final goal during a Wildcat power play at 5:49 of the third period.

Northern Michigan out-shot the Lakers 21-8 in the second period and 36-26 for the game. Tarkki improved to 17-6-5, while Jaff Jakaitis (5-16-4) totaled 32 saves in the loss.

LSSU was 2-for-7 on the power play, while NMU finished 2-for-6.
