Wildcats fend off Lakers in regular-season finale

SAULT STE. MARIE - Fourteenth-ranked Northern Michigan fended off a solid Lake Superior State attack to win Game 4 of the Cappo Cup series, 3-2, on Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

NMU (20-9-7 overall, 17-7-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) won the series, three games to one. Saturday's game was the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Wildcats broke open a 1-1 game with second-period goals by Jamie Milam and Pat Bateman at 3:25 and 10:00, respectively.

Laker Trent Campbell trimmed NMU's lead to 3-2 by scoring his second power-play goal of the night at 12:56 of the second period.

LSSU (9-20-7 overall, 8-15-6 CCHA) out-shot the Wildcats 16-6 in the third period, but was held scoreless.

Kevin Gardner scored Northern Michigan's first goal at 5:37 of the first period. Campbell's first goal came at 14:37 of the opening period. Derek R. Smith, Kory Scoran and Mark Adamek drew assists on the Laker goals.

Lake Superior State out-shot NMU 35-28 for the game. Senior goaltender Matt Violin totaled 25 saves for LSSU. Tuomas Tarkki improved to 18-6-5 after stopping 33 of 35 shots on goal.

LSSU finished 2-for-7 on the power play, while NMU was 1-for-3.

The Lakers finished ninth in the CCHA regular-season standings and will travel to Nebraska-Omaha or Bowling Green for the first round of the playoffs March 11-13.
