Miami icers thump Lakers 8-1

OXFORD, Ohio - Seven different players scored goals for the Miami hockey team, which beat Lake Superior State 8-1 Friday and extended the Lakers' seven-year drought in Oxford.

Miami (19-15-3 overall, 12-12-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first period and extended its lead to 5-0 in the second. The RedHawks led 8-0 before LSSU freshman Steve McJannet, who moved from forward from defense, scored at 11:41 of the third period to ruin goalie David Burleigh's shutout. Nathan Ward and Kyle Anderson drew assists.

Nick Jardine scored two goals, and Taylor Hustead, Mike Kompon, Greg Hogeboom, Ben Tharp, Matt Davis and Pat Levendusky added one each. Todd Grant totaled four assists.

Miami outshot LSSU 48-18 and finished 2-for-8 on the power play. Burleigh (18-15-3) had 16 saves before being replaced by David Bowen at 11:59 of the third period.

LSSU goalie Matt Violin (4-20-3) totaled 21 saves through two periods. Terry Denike took over in the third period and stopped 19 shots.

LSSU fell to 6-25-4 overall, 3-23-1 in the CCHA.

Miami and LSSU meet again Saturday at Goggin Arena.
