Derek A. Smith is among Offensive Defenseman of the Year candidates

FARMINGTON HILLS - Lake Superior State junior defenseman Derek A. Smith is one of three candidates for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's Offensive Defenseman of the Year Award.

Smith, who was named to the All-CCHA Second Team on defense, has recorded a career-best 26 points in 39 games this season, including 16 in 28 conference games. He is ranked third in the CCHA in overall scoring among defensemen with 9-17--26 and totaled 6-10--16 in league play. The other two finalists are Michigan's Jack Johnson and Ohio State's Sean Collins, who is also a candidate for defensive defenseman of the year.

The award will be presented at the CCHA Awards Banquet on Thursday at the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit.
