BIG RAPIDS -- Despite scoring first, the Lake Superior State hockey team ended its season with another 6-1 loss against Ferris State Saturday night at Ewigleben Ice Arena. The Lakers finished the season 6-28-4 overall after dropping both games of the best-of-three Central Collegiate Hockey Association first-round playoff series.

Freshman Jon Booras scored his second goal of the weekend during a 5-on-3 power play, giving LSSU a 1-0 lead at 5:21 of the first period. Chris Peterson gained his second assist of the series and freshman Ren Fauci also assisted on the goal.

The Bulldogs (29-8-1), who earned their first trip to the CCHA Super Six in a decade, rallied with three unanswered goals to finish the first period with a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Derek Nesbitt scored twice for FSU.

The Lakers out-shot Ferris State 11-9 in the second period but couldn't score. Bulldog forward Chris Kunitz made it 4-1 with a goal 37 seconds into the period.

After Kunitz's goal, LSSU sophomore goalie Terry Denike replaced Matt Violin in the net. Bulldog junior Simon Mangos scored a power-play goal against Denike at 18:44 of the second period.

Trailed 5-1, the Lakers also peppered Ferris State goalies Mike Brown and Matt Swanson with 11 shots in the third period. Bulldogs' captain Troy Milam scored the final goal of the game at 8:09.

The Lakers were 1-for-7 on the power play, and Ferris State was 2-for-8. Kunitz finished with a goal and two assists, while Jeff Legue had four assists and Jeremy Scherlinck added three helpers.

Ferris State moves on to the CCHA Super Six Championship at Joe Louis Arena March 20-22.

"To really validate our regular season, you have to win it all," Ferris State coach Bob Daniels told "It has been a terrific run. We can't get caught up in the heat of the moment. We can't worry about making mistakes. We just have to go out and have fun. We have to come out hard and give a solid effort."
