Laker hockey team changes its summer camps format

Go Lakers!

April 4, 2005

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State's week-long summer hockey camps, which will be held June 26-July 1, will include a new format that meets needs of youth hockey players in the surrounding area and require a less-demanding commitment of time and money than traditional hockey schools.

"The summer camp we are running will have an emphasis on serving Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area," LSSU coach Frank Anzalone said. "It is for all kids who want to skate and work on their skills for minimal cost. It caters to any youngster who has some experience."

The 2005 Laker Hockey Summer Camps will include a day camp for players ages 9-13, who will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday of that week. The cost is $150 per player in U.S. funds, and lunch will be provided. Students in the day camp will skate two hours a day, participate in dryland training and play a final game Friday afternoon.

An evening camp for players age 14 and up will begin Sunday, June 26, and run through Thursday, June 30. The evening sessions will be limited to 33 players (18 forwards, 12 defensemen and three goalies) and include 90 minutes of ice time and 50 minutes of dryland training. The cost is $85.

Members of the Lake Superior State hockey team will serve as counselors. The coaching staff will include Anzalone, LSSU assistant coaches Jim Roque and Tim Christian, and one coach to be named at a later date.

LSSU is offering five days of elite-level instruction at one-third the cost of traditional hockey schools.

"This idea has been well-received," Anzalone said. "We anticipate that the sessions will fill quickly. This camp will follow the excitement of the MAHA Select 15 camp that we are hosting (June 19-24)."

The registration deadline is May 15. Brochures have been mailed to Sault Michigan Hockey Association players, and are available at the Norris Center or by clicking on For more information, call 906-635-2835.
