Peterson to play in inline skating world championship

Chris Peterson

June 9, 2004

CORONA, Cal. - Former Lake Superior State forward Chris Peterson was named to the United States roller hockey team that will compete in the 10th Federation Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) World Inline Roller Hockey Championships June 21-July 1 in London, Ont.

Approximately 25 players were asked to try out for the team during a three-day camp in Corona that began May 13. In order to earn try-out opportunity, Peterson competed in a select tournament at the Skate Plex in Sterling Heights last August. Members of the Team USA selection committee scouted similar tournaments held throughout the U.S.

"It was really exciting to make the team," Peterson said. "It was a lot of fun to play with guys who have so much experience in roller hockey. I am really looking forward to playing in the World Championships. It will open up a lot of new opportunities."

Peterson is one of only two rookies who were added to the 14-member team, which won a gold medal at the World Championships last summer in Pisek, Czech Republic. This year's tournament will have a record 15 teams in two pools. The United States is in Pool A along with France, Switzerland, Mexico, Great Britain, Sweden and Australia. Team Canada is in Pool B along with the Czech Republic, Italy, Korea, Columbia, Japan, Spain and Singapore.

When not playing for Team USA, Peterson plays for the Detroit-based Tour Mudcats. His team won a tournament in Chicago last weekend and will travel to Philadelphia on Friday.

Peterson, a 2004 graduate of LSSU, appeared in 113 games and totaled nine goals and 24 assists for the Lakers.
