1994 NCAA champion hockey team to celebrate 10-year anniversary

Lakers celebrate 1994 NCAA Ice Hockey championship

June 30, 2004

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State alumni and fans are invited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Lakers' 1994 NCAA ice hockey championship during a reunion banquet on Saturday, July 17.

The event will include a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by a dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Elks Club in Sault Ste. Marie. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7.50 for children. The dinner is open to the public.

More than two dozen players, coaches and support staff members, including 1994 NCAA Tournament most valuable player Sean Tallaire, 1994 NCAA All-Tournament Team selections Keith Aldridge and Blaine Lacher, and former coaches Jeff Jackson, Ron Rolston and Paul Pooley will attend.

The 1993-94 LSSU hockey team finished 31-10-4 overall and 18-8-4 for second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Led by Lacher, who had a single-season school record 1.98 goals-against average, and leading scorer Sean Tallaire (23-32-55), the Lakers cruised through the NCAA Tournament after a disappointing 3-0 loss to Michigan in the CCHA Playoffs championship.

LSSU defeated Northeastern (6-5), Michigan (5-4) and Harvard (3-2) in three straight overtime decisions before whipping Boston University 9-1 in the NCAA title game in front of 16,000 fans at St. Paul, Minn.

That Laker team included many standouts, including forward Clayton Beddoes, who earned second-team All-America honors and became one of only 11 players to be named to the CCHA All-Academic Team three times. Several players went on to have outstanding professional hockey careers. Lacher and Beddoes had a stints with the Boston Bruins, while forward Rob Valicevic has been with a number of National Hockey League teams, the latest being the Dallas Stars. Aldridge, Mike Morin, Mike Matteucci, Brian Felsner, Gerald Tallaire, Sean Tallaire and Kurt Miller were still playing professionally through last season.

Others who will return for the reunion are Jason Trzcinski, Jay Ness, Matteucci, Brad Willner, Gerald Tallaire, Wayne Strachan, Miller, Scott McCabe, Darren Wetherill, Dan Angelelli, Valicevic, Gino Pulente, Dan Galarneau, Paul Sass, former equipment manager Gil Somes, and former student managers Dave Gilbert and Mark Palumbo. Beddoes, Felsner, Sean Kulick and Steve Barnes may be able to make it, but have not confirmed at this time.

The players and coaches will play golf at Wild Bluff in Bay Mills the morning of July 17 and will tour the Norris Center hockey facilities later that day. Dinner tickets are available at the Norris Center Ticket Office on a first-come/first-served basis until sold out.
