DETROIT-The Lake Superior State University ice hockey team has been picked to finish 12th in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association by the league's coaches and media. The announcement was made Tuesday at the annual media day at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. Defending playoff champion Michigan was picked for the second straight season as the conference's preseason champion by the coaches and media.

Ten of the 12 coaches chose Michigan to finish first, while one vote each went to Michigan State and defending regular season champion Ferris State. Ohio State was picked fourth followed by Northern Michigan, Miami, Notre Dame, Alaska Fairbanks, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, Nebraska-Omaha and Lake Superior.

In the media poll, a league-record 82 media members voted. Michigan received 70 of the 82 first-place votes while Michigan State received seven, Ferris State two, and Ohio State three. Both polls had the same five teams in their top five but the media pushed Michigan State ahead of Ferris State.

The Lakers open up the 2003-2004 season with an exhibition game against Windsor on October 11 at the Taffy Abel Arena. The official opener is October 17 at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.
