Laker Hockey Blue-White Game is Sunday

Sept. 25, 2002

SAULT STE. MARIE - Special seating will be arranged for Laker Hockey's Blue-White Game on Sunday to allow Lake Superior State University students to cheer for their designated team.

Laker Hockey players will hand out game passes to LSSU students throughout the week, and the passes will designate that the students cheer for either the Blue team or the White team. Student cheering sections will be roped off behind the benches. For this game only, seating will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and season tickets will not be honored.

Students who do not receive a pass from a Laker player are invited to the game. A $2 admission will be charged. The Blue-White Game will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Taffy Abel Arena and features two 15-minute periods.

"The Blue-White game is an opportunity for our players to compete against one another, to get their feet wet, to feel competition," LSSU hockey coach Frank Anzalone said. "It's a real good opportunity for the team to speak with CCHA (Central Collegiate Hockey Association) officials to understand the new 15-second face-off rule. It's also an opportunity for the fans to come out and have fun with no pressure to win or lose. They can come out and see the team play."

With 15 freshmen on the team, many fans will want to see how the new players stack up. The Lakers have 11 returnees, including goaltenders Matt Violin and Terry Denike, but two experienced defensemen and seven forwards.

The season-opening week also includes "Meet the Lakers" at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Cisler Center, the first day of on-ice practice with coaches on Friday, and Skate with the Lakers on Sunday following the Blue-White Game. A jersey sale, including game-worn jerseys from the 1983-2000 seasons, will be held during "Meet the Lakers" and the Blue-White Game.

LSSU ticket manager Tracey MacQuarrie announced that season tickets are still available. Season ticket holders can pick up packages at the Norris Center ticket office during regular business hours. For more information, call 635-2602.
