Oct. 8, 2005

SAULT STE. MARIE - Despite another two assists by sophomore defenseman Derek A. Smith, the Lake Superior State hockey team failed to hold onto its slim lead and dropped a 4-3 decision to the U.S. National Team Development Program's Under-18 team in an exhibition game on Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Smith drew assists on the Lakers' first-period power-play goals to finish with six points for the weekend.

LSSU and Team USA were tied, 2-2, at the end of the first period after both teams did all of their scoring on power plays. Nathan Ward and Colin Nicholson had Laker goals, while Erik Johnson scored twice for the U-18s.

Ren Fauci gave LSSU a 3-2 lead with the first even-strength goal of the game at 5:54 of the second period. The one-goal lead stood until Jamie McBain of Team USA scored at 13:42 of the third period. Tony Mosey tallied the game-winner 33 seconds later.

LSSU had a man advantage during the final 2:47 and pulled goaltender Jeff Jakaitis in favor of an extra attacker with 52 seconds to go, but failed to score.

Both teams finished 2-for-10 on the power play. Jakaitis finished with 24 saves, while Joseph Palmer stopped 25 shots for Team USA.

In addition to Smith, Jeff Rainville, Trent Campbell, Mark Adamek and Dan Eves had assists for LSSU.

LSSU continues its four-week homestand with a non-conference series against Colgate on Oct. 14-15.
