Lakers edge Quinnipiac

Oct. 11, 2002

ORONO, Maine - Coach Frank Anzalone officially claimed his 200th victory as Lake Superior State's hockey coach after the Lakers edged Quinnipiac 2-1 Friday in the first round of the Black Bear Classic in Orono, Maine.

LSSU (1-0) defeated Western Ontario in an exhibition game last week, but the Maine Tournament is considered the Lakers' official season opener. Anzalone, who returned to the LSSU bench last season after coaching professional hockey for 10 years, improved his career record to 200-135-24.

Senior Jeremy Bachusz assisted on both Laker goals as LSSU went 2-for-5 on the power play. Senior Aaron Davis gave Lake Superior State a 1-0 lead at 5:43 of the first period. Mike Adamek drew the other assist.

Quinnipiac (1-1) tied the game 1-1 with a power-play goal at 11:18 of the second period. LSSU freshman Adrian Kremblewski answered for what proved to be the game-winner at 18:12. Colin Nicholson had the other assist.

Winning goalie Terry Denike totaled 21 saves, including nine in the third period. The Lakers out-shot the Bobcats 33-22.

LSSU plays the Maine-New Brunswick winner in the championship game Saturday at 7 p.m.
